Our work

Since inception, EED has supported over 600 initiatives aimed at promoting democracy in the EU neighbourhood and beyond. This database provides an insight into the work of EED partners over the years. However, due to the sensitive nature of certain initiatives and personal security risks facing some grantees in the restrictive environments where they operate, not all initiatives are listed in the database.

  • Al-Marsad - Legal Services for the Syrian community of the Golan Heights

    Country: Israel, Syria

    The Arab Center for Human Rights Al-Marsad is the only human rights organization operating in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. It was founded in 2003 to protect the rights of the population affected by Israeli occupation. For this project, Al-Marsad will be providing legal assistance to this community. Tangibly, this would include pushing back against ID revocation, defending economic rights, protecting property rights, etc.

  • Syria Direct

    Country: Syria

    Founded in 2013, Syria Direct started as a media initiative specialised in training for aspiring talented Syrian and international journalists in professional news-gathering and accurate in-depth reporting. It has then developed a solid network of skilled journalists that regularly publish critical and compelling analysis of key issues affecting the country. With EED’s funding, Syria Direct will increase their publication frequency and maximise their social media presence in order to increase its readership and deepen its outreach among Arabic speakers, further anchoring themselves as the go-to source for readers for informative and credible news about Syria.

  • Suwar Magazine

    Country: Syria

    Suwar Magazine is an independent online Syrian media outlet founded in 2013. With EED’s support, they seek to instil roots for democratic change in Syria by highlighting the importance of women’s and youth participation in political processes on one hand, and promoting transparency and accountability on the other hand. The EED grant will allow them to produce reports on these topics, which will be shared on their website and social media and also to train young female journalists. Suwar Magazine has won two awards for investigative reports.

  • Door Beyond War Organization

    Country: Syria

    Door Beyond War wants to re-engage in local activism a group of civil society activists who were displaced by the war in Syria, to help them remain active and be heard in their new environment. EED support allowed them to establish an IDPs team of activists, training them on social dialogue and trust-building approaches, and to organise dialogue sessions and workshops in 13 communities in northwest Syria.

  • Bousla for Development & Innovation (Pusula Dernegi)

    Country: Syria

    Bousla for Development & Innovation seeks to revive interest in pro-democracy activism among local communities in the northwest of Syria using their network of activists in the region. With EED funding, they are training local change-makers on democracy and human rights principles to help them become democracy, peace and/or human rights ambassadors within their communities through their own activities. In parallel, Bousla aims to contribute to breaking a predominant narrative of victimization by “giving a voice to the current voiceless success stories”, shedding light on local civil activists who positively contribute to the promotion of human rights, peaceful coexistence and democratic principles.

  • Observatory of Hate Speech and Incitement to Violence in Syrian Media

    Country: Syria

    In 2017 the Syrian Center for Media and Freedom of Expression launched a unique media monitoring initiative to reduce hate speech and incitement to violence in Syrian media. After monitoring 24 media outlets, they published a report and organised a workshop on hate speech for media representatives. EED funding is allowing them to carry out a new monitoring cycle with an upgraded monitoring methodology and to develop a glossary with alternatives to hate speech terms.

  • Justice for Life

    Country: Syria

    Justice for Life Organisation is one of the very few pro-democracy organisations operating in Deir Ezzor, a Syrian region that has been severely affected by the three-year rule of the Islamic State. They aim to create a safe space for community dialogue, with special attention for women and youth participation. With EED support, they are spreading awareness of human rights and democratic values through training sessions, focus groups and video material.

  • Al-Jumhuriya Collective

    Country: Syria

    Al-Jumhuriya, a prominent independent Syrian media outlet, strives to promote open debate, critical thinking and progressive values by providing in-depth coverage and analysis of Syrian politics, society and culture. EED funding is helping them to develop and start implementing a long-term sustainability strategy.

  • Voice of Nas (VON)

    Country: Syria

    Voice of Nas FM (VON FM) is a media organisation founded by a group of local journalists in Qamishli, Syria in 2017. With EED’s support VON FM aim to produce and broadcast community-based audio and visual programmes in the North East of Syria to addresss the negative effects and impact of extremism in the region, contribute to social peace and promote civic values amongst the local communities. To further the reach of their work in countering extremist ideologies, VON FM aim to collaborate with local CSOs.

  • Fraternity for Human Rights

    Country: Syria

    The Fraternity Foundation for Human Rights (FFHR) promotes the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly (FoAA) in the North-East region of Syria which is under the control of the Kurdish Self-Administration. The organisation’s overall objective is to reinforce the role of the civil society as a key pillar of democratic governance in the area. With EED’s support, FFHR are launching an initiative to advocate for amending the FoAA law in accordance with international standards through coordinated advocacy with local CSOs and awareness raising activities on FoAA.
