Since inception, EED has supported over 600 initiatives aimed at promoting democracy in the EU neighbourhood and beyond. This database provides an insight into the work of EED partners over the years. However, due to the sensitive nature of certain initiatives and personal security risks facing some grantees in the restrictive environments where they operate, not all initiatives are listed in the database.
The Joumana Haddad Freedoms Center is a newly established organisation promoting civil rights and dialogue among community members. EED funding will enable the centre to expand their work to include the various regions of Lebanon: the north, the east, the mountainous centre, and the south, in addition to Beirut. They will hold debates on various controversial topics, including the sectarian political system in Lebanon, feminism, LGBT rights and freedom of expression together with local well-respected CSOs.
Read moreHakawati is a Beirut-based podcast which, a year after its launch, has already become one of the most popular podcasting platforms in the region. With EED’s support, it is producing the second season of “Khilqit Binit”, in which the group interviews successful Arab women who are impacting society and challenging the status quo. Their objective is to encourage young Arab women and girls through the example represented by the interviewees, while discussing sensitive topics such as equal pay, honour killings, under-age marriages, and domestic worker abuse.
Read moreIn 2018 EED supported the Gherbal Initiative, which aimed to test and reinforce the Freedom of Information Law that Lebanon passed in 2017. The team followed up with freedom of information requests, presented the data to the public and liaised with both government and civil society to amplify the initiatives’ impact. This new initiative from the same group seeks to consolidate those efforts by continuing to monitor and augment enforcement of the information law. The group plan to publish electronically, and in a user-friendly style, every administration’s budget from 2018-20. It will further strengthen its outreach to media that are capable of utilizing the data and amplifying relevant findings. EED funding is needed to keep the organization running and ensuring access to information.

From their headquarters based in Beirut, Daraj publish news and investigative reports on critical topics, while furthering political discussions in the region through opinion and analysis pieces. EED provided Daraj with seed funding in 2017 and will now provide them with core support to allow the organisation to focus their efforts on producing dynamic content and establishing alternative revenue streams that will allow them to be sustainable.

The initiative aims to counter false and hateful narratives disseminated by Lebanese media while also generating critical public debate. Since its inception in 2017, Megaphone has witnessed a significant increase in their viewership. EED’s renewed funding will allow the initiative to sustain their operations and extend their reach.

To fill the gap in independent news outlets in Lebanon, EED will support Al Murasila, or The (Female) Correspondent, an independent online news platform led by two women, focusing exclusively on long-form investigative reporting. The platform aims to engage in accountability and investigative journalism necessary to hold the Lebanese state to account for its upcoming reforms and legislations.
