On October 7, EED Board of Governors member Pavol Demeš presented this year’s GLOBSEC Freedom award to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who has emerged over past weeks as the new figurehead of the Belarusian opposition.
In his address, Demeš noted that this award is for the people of Belarus, in recognition for their peaceful and courageous drive for democracy, freedom and human rights.
He noted that the origin of the name Svitalana is ‘svetlo’ which means light in both Slovak and Belarusian, and he asked Tsikhanouskaya to accept this award as a symbol of light and encouragement for her, her family, political prisoners and all the brave people of Belarus.
