Human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights are core values of the European Union. One of the EU’s main goals is to promote these principles across the world. For the second year in a row, four democracy support organisations are teaming up with the European Parliament, the European External Action Service and the European Commission to organise a joint event in celebration of the International Day of Democracy.
The European Endowment for Democracy (EED), European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP), European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), and the Office of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to the EU, are non-governmental and inter-governmental organizations dedicated to promoting democracy and democratic values in Europe and beyond.
In these testing times for democracy, we believe it is crucial to stand together in support of democratic and European values and inspire a discussion about possible new ways of democratic renewal. The event aims to provide a forum to take stock of current trends and challenges, and analyse the needs and possibilities for reconnecting citizens and democratic institutions. High level politicians will participate in discussion panels with academics, grassroots activists and practitioners, ensuring a broad range of interests and expertise.
This is a public event, targeted at the community of practitioners working in the field of democracy support and all those interested in the latest trends, challenges and issues connected to democracy promotion.
