Supporting democracy in Europe and the European Neighbourhood - The role of independent media and civil society

As governments throughout the European neighbourhood have continued to respond to the COVID-19 health emergency and react to deepening economic crises, civil society and independent media are playing a crucial role in building and defending democracy.
For Democracy Week 2021, the European Endowment for Democracy is hosting a panel welcoming a range of speakers from the MENA region and the Western Balkans, including civil activists and independent journalists, to discuss their instrumental role in protecting and strengthening democracy.

Danilo Krivokapić, Share Foundation, Serbia Danilo is director of SHARE Foundation, a Belgrade-based digital rights organisation. A lawyer by education, his fields of work and expertise include data protection, the impact of data-driven business models on privacy, and legal standards for information security and cybercrime. He is a founder of the initiative #hiljadekamera (thousands of cameras). |

Yaşar Adnan Adanali, Center for Spatial Justice, Turkey Yaşar Adnan Adanalı is Istanbul-based urbanist, activist and lecturer. He is the co-founder and director of Center for Spatial Justice (Turkish: Mekanda Adalet Derneğ. MAD), an inter-disciplinary action research institute specialised in spatial justice. After his PhD on urban transformation, he worked as a development specialist and teaches participatory planning courses. He is the chief editor of beyond.istanbul magazine and a consultant for Düzce Hope Homes, the first participatory mass-housing project in Turkey. |

Yara El Murr, The Public Source, Lebanon Yara El Murr is a multimedia journalist who mainly covers the intersection of health and social issues. She is currently a staff journalist at The Public Source, where she produces short videos, health and environment PSAs, and a mix of short stories and in depth investigations. In parallel, El Murr works on independent projects that document the memories and traumas inherited from the Lebanese Civil War. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, Newlines Magazine, The New Arab, Scheherazade Speaks Science and other media outlets. |

Ece Temelkuran is an award-winning Turkish novelist, political thinker and public speaker, whose writing has appeared in The Guardian, The New York Times, New Statesman, Frankfurter Allgemeine and Der Spiegel. She won the Edinburgh International Book Festival Book Award for her novel Women Who Blow on Knots and the Ambassador of New Europe Award for her book Turkey: The Insane and the Melancholy. Ece has been granted honorary citizenship of Palermo for her advocacy of refugees. She is the author of the internationally acclaimed book How to lose a country. Her latest book is Together – 10 choices for a better now. |
